Aligned Motion is a technology startup in Hong Kong, that brings together the Classical Pilates community of teachers and practitioners, through an integrated studio management platform.
Studios, directors, teachers, and clients from the Classical Pilates community previously used varying software and processes that weren’t built for the nuances of their practice. They needed an integrated platform that would eliminate inefficient and manual processes, steer away from using bloated gym management portals, and evolve their day-to-day communication as a community.
Aligned Motion approached my team at Make to design and develop a platform that answers those problems directly, coming in with a long list of ideal features.
We collaborated with the client in each step of the product development process — from validating her business goals and identifying pain points through qualitative user research. This allowed us to highlight and prioritize key product features in designing a Minimum Viable Product.
We created a Video MVP, to launch a beta testing platform for a small group of practitioners within the community.
To gain a deeper connection with our communities’ pain points, the team spent observation hours in a pilates studio, attended a pilates session, and interviewed key personas found in their community.
This helped us find the perfect balance between what our client wants and what the community needs.
From our research, we identified a key opportunity to start with a booking feature for the studio management system. We saw that this will answer three major pain points for all pilates practitioners.
The first pain point we wanted to address was the long back-and-forth conversation of scheduling between first time clients and studios.
These usually take several days and as schedules can be hard to align.
With the platform, the studio owner should be able to book sessions and set available schedules (or “free time slots”) which the client can freely book.
We also noticed that teachers usually teach at more than one studio. We provided a feature that allows teachers to “connect” to several studios in the platform. Connecting to a studio allows them to have access to their calendar and schedule.
Syncing all calendars was essential to making the platform work, helping each user in the community make better and faster decisions when it comes to scheduling.
Our wireframes and designs are handed out as prototypes for review to the client.
This ensures that our designs and flows are understood by our major stakeholders.
Feedback both by the client and prospective users are taken into account for revisions and iterations.
Applying the design thinking process in product development also helped Aligned Motion ensure positive buy-in from the community’s major stakeholders.
